Mulligan's Retreat Interest Survey

Thank you for visiting the blogspot for Mulligan's Retreat.  If you are visiting this site but have decided not to attend a camp session this summer, please take about 5 minutes to complete this survey.  We would like to design camps based on viewer interest, so the feedback that you provide will allow us to make this the best equestrian experience available.

Spring at Mulligan's Retreat

It is amazing the difference a month makes in the mountains of southwestern Virginia.  The snow has melted and the pastures are turning greener with every daffodil that blooms. I had the unique opportunity of touring Cross Creek Farm in Alleghany County, North Carolina where Colette Nester and her family humanely raise farm animals for food.  Hopefully, during the adult horse camps, we will be serving mostly local, sustainable foods from the region. Check out their website for more details about the farm and about this wonderful family http://www.crosscreekfarmnc.com/index.html. Here are some pictures that were taken during Easter weekend to give us hope that warm spring and summer weather is coming soon.

Winter at Mulligan's Retreat

The winter has been very long and cold in southwest Virginia.  The locals tell me that it has been the coldest winter that they can remember and there has been a ton of snow on the ground.  Once the snow melts completely and the spring warms the ground, hopefully the pastures will become lush and green with Kentucky fescue.  We are in the process of adding some landscaping touches.  Of course, this can be tricky since the deer numbers exceed human in Grayson county.  My wonderful landscaper assures me that he will plant only those trees and shrubs that the deer find offensive.  I have been actively seeking out farmers in Grayson and surrounding counties who produce food animals using humane methods and who grow quality organic produce.  It is my desire during the adult camps to serve locally grown and produced, sustainable foods so that all participants will gain an appreciation of eating locally.  The pictures were taken this week after the snow started to melt.  Will post more as the mountains become greener.
